The Danger of Words: When to Use Industrial PVC Gloves for Strippers?

In the metallurgical and automotive sectors, a single word can cause massive confusion in the PPE storeroom: stripper.
Although the term seems to indicate a single type of application, it refers to two completely opposite chemical categories. Therefore, choosing the correct industrial PVC glove is vital for safety. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) has excellent resistance against one of them but will be quickly destroyed by the other.
Understand the definitive chemical difference to protect your team and ensure the durability of your Handschuhe PPE.
The STRENGTH of PVC Against Inorganic and Diluted Organic Acids
PVC has extremely high chemical inertia against inorganic and mineral acids. It does not corrode and blocks the penetration of these substances with extreme efficiency. It also blocks organic acids very efficiently, provided they are diluted.
⚠️ Technical Attention: PVC is excellent for organic acids in low concentrations (such as diluted acetic or citric acid solutions). However, if the organic acid is pure or concentrated (like Glacial Acetic Acid), it will act as a solvent, extracting the plasticizers from the glove, making it rigid and brittle.
Therefore, PVC gloves are perfect for the first two categories below:
1. Acid Strippers and Phosphatizers (PVC is EXCELLENT)
Used in metallurgy to remove rust, oxidation, and mill scale, as well as preparing metal for painting (passivation).
Common Composition: Phosphoric Acid, Nitric Acid, Hydrofluoric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, and Sulfonic Acid.
Recommended PPE: PVC gloves with a cotton textile support, high thickness, and long cuffs. Handschuhe offers rough or smooth palm models with lengths of 65 cm and 70 cm, which are ideal for this operation.
2. Acid Strippers and Passivators
Also applied in metallurgy for post-weld cleaning and the preparation of ferrous or stainless steel surfaces. They contain inorganic acids that are aggressive to the skin but safe for PVC.
Market products compatible with Handschuhe PVC gloves:
Quimatic Tapmatic: Limpa Solda Inox Gel (Fast Action or Non-Staining) and Limpa Inox Gel.
Avesta Finishing Chemicals: Avesta Pickling Gel 102.
Gran Química: Granfosfer 30 (3-in-1: stripper, degreaser, and phosphatizer) and Gran Deoxy CL.
NutriChemical: Loxon Inox Gel.
Bio-Chem (Walter Surface Technologies): E-WELD Gel and Surfox-G.

The ENEMY of PVC: PAINT STRIPPERS (Removers)
Here lies the danger. Used in the automotive sector (bodywork and painting) and industrial maintenance, these products serve to strip layers of enamels, primers, varnishes, and old paint. They are not acids, but rather formulations based on aggressive aromatic, chlorinated solvents, or ketones.
Common Composition: Dichloromethane (chlorinated solvent), Toluene and Xylene (aromatic solvents), Ethyl Acetate, and ketones.
⚠️ What happens to PVC? These heavy organic solvents dissolve the plasticizers in the PVC. The glove will melt, wrinkle, crack, and completely lose its protective barrier within a few minutes of use. PVC is totally counter-indicated here.
Products that destroy PVC (Require other solutions):
AkzoNobel / Sparlack: Pintoff Paint and Varnish Remover.
Maxi Rubber: Paste Remover (Removedor Pastoso).
Montana Química: Striptizi Gel.
Natrielli / Anjo Tintas: Paste Remover (Removedor Pastoso).
Mundial Prime / Colorart / Radnaq: Spray Paint Remover (automotive aerosols).
What PPE to use for Paint Removers?
For the safe handling of these solvents, specific butyl rubber or PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) gloves must be used, never PVC.
Pocket Guide for the Safety Technician
Acid / Phosphatizing Stripper (Mineral or Diluted Organic): Use Handschuhe PVC gloves (65 cm or 70 cm).
Pure / Concentrated Organic Acids: Requires technical evaluation and monitoring (Risk of losing glove flexibility).
Paint Stripper (Solvents / Removers): PVC use is counter-indicated. Look for Butyl or PVA solutions.
